Paw-fect Portland [A Mecca for America's Pets]

Looking for just the right digs for your pet in Portland? Whether you're renting or buying in the nation's leading housing market, it's important to many of you pet parents out there to identify the neighborhoods and amenities that support your tail-waggin' lifestyle. BarkPost recently wrote about the top 10 considerations for pets when searching for a new home and Rover.com has awarded a silver medal to Portland for its dog friendliness.

This is really the paw-fect place, friend.

And according to the Humane Society, nearly 80 million American households call one or more fur babies family members and every year that number continues to rise. It's no wonder that consumers gravitate toward the conveniences for our four-legged pals, and Portland is no exception. From luxury pet hotels to plenty of Chuck-It friendly grassy knolls, the metro area has been dubbed one of the most pet-friendly in the nation since 2011.

The city of Portland boasts 33 public off-leash dog parks within the city limits, nine of which are fenced, reducing the chances of your escape artist getting into mischief. Suburban Tigard's Summerlake Park and Gresham's Main City Park also offer plenty of spots to get your zoomies on. Park hours vary depending on the time of year, but they tend to be busier during rush hours. Remember to keep Sparky's vaccines up to date, monitor your dog's manners and behavior at the park and always follow park rules. Not into a wet, muddy post-romp cleanup? Try Reed's climate-controlled Fido's Indoor Dog Park, an industrial warehouse that boasts water and grass parks as well as hourly daycare and overnight boarding. They offer a variety of packages to fit the needs of your pup, from unlimited memberships to pay-by-the-day.

Do you prefer your sidekick in tow to social outings? Boise-Eliot's Purrington's Cat Lounge and Lucky Labrador's four locations across the east and west sides personally invite your fur baby to tag along with you to happy hour. Across the metro area and throughout Oregon, you can enjoy a McMenamins pint in many of their several dozen pubs offering indoor and patio seating, while your fluff ball takes in some zzz's.

Or if you and your pet are the zen types, consider Purrington's semimonthly cat yoga classes (no joke) or tag team a training session at the Pearl's The Zoom Room, where Shaggy can engage in agility training, or structured playtime to get the wiggles out.

If you're into the outdoors, consider taking your swimmer east to Troutdale's Sandy River Delta at 1000 Acres Park, Portland's largest outdoor pet recreation site where you'll share the vast landscape with riders on horseback and nature observers. Spread out from the pack along the delta's bank of the Sandy and Columbia Rivers for some Chuck-It and tail-waggin' good time. Like any good pup parent, ensure you pick up after your pooch and consider potential dangers of the Sandy River. Short on time? Let OR Tails' wear out your furball with adventurous day camps of hiking, swimming, plenty of zooms and socialization.

For the royal four-legged friend of yours, treat them to luxurious spa services like nail trims and bubble baths during an over-nighter at Northwest's Sniff Dog Hotel and Meowhaus in Kerns.
